Training Log 10/22/09

Just got 4 dogs from Dan MacEachen/Krabloonik Kennels to try out for the team; Cash, Carson, Travis, and Garth. After just 2 runs they look pretty solid but need more time to evaluate.  Walter and Jetta are leading from start to finish of runs and seem to be enjoying being up front. Our main leaders; Shell Johny, Elli, Thelma, Lefty, Louise, Ollie, Anvik, Screamer, are all taking turns working with the younger leaders, making sure they take the right turns and stay to the far right of any road as we train a lot on dirt roads and jeep trails. We’re taking it slow on building up mileage of runs as the last 2 years we’ve had sore foot problems; we train on fairly abrasive gravel/dirt roads and it wears their pads fairly thin; we’re already booting some feet. We’re training 34 dogs right now; I run 18 and Linda runs 16; but all the yearlings will go to Krabloonik in December to work for Dan MacEachen’s tour business. Dogs aren’t reallyready to run Iditarod until they’re 3 yrs. The other dogs that won’t make the team will also go to Dan to work for Krabloonik. It’s a matter of speed mostly; some dogs don’t like the increased speed of the team. All the yearlings are running really well and are on track for making the team in the future. We’d like to take only 28-30 dogs to Montana where we go to long runs on snow and where our 3 prep races are held. More next update-Lach
